Character Education
Out of Dewey’s strategic plan, grew a new and exciting Character Education Program to help today’s tigers become leaders in and stewards of their community. Our new program focuses on the book Inch and Miles: The Journey to Success by Coach John Wooden. Inch and Miles guides us through Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success. The Pyramid of Success provides students the building blocks (the tools) necessary to be their PERSONAL BEST.
Dewey Families, please continue to follow the “Character Corner” in the Tiger Tale to know what pages we are reading as well as suggested questions and discussion topics.
Character Education: Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success
Out of Dewey’s strategic plan, grew an exciting Character Education Program to help today’s tigers become leaders in and stewards of their community. Dewey Elementary School is proud to partner with Harper for Kids to promote the character traits from legendary UCLA Coach John Wooden's Pyramid of Success and his definition of success for children which is: “Success is happiness in your heart because you made the effort, 100%, to do your best!”
Our character education program focuses on Coach Wooden's children's book "Inch and Miles: The Journey to Success". Inch and Miles guides us through Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success. The Pyramid of Success provides students the building blocks (the tools) necessary to be their PERSONAL BEST.

Harper for Kids is a children’s nonprofit organization founded by Tim & Peanut Louie Harper in 2008 to teach children the character traits necessary to succeed in life. Since our partnership with Harper for Kids began in 2013, Tim & Peanut have done several "Pyramid of Success" assemblies for our students and painted a large "Pyramid of Success" mural in our school yard with the help of some of our Dewey parents. And through their partnership with USTA, Harper for Kids also arranged for Dewey Elementary to have three striped 36' tennis courts painted in the school yard.
All of us at Dewey Elementary are excited about working with Harper for Kids to bring focused character education to our students. For more information about Harper for Kids, please visit their website: www.harperforkids.org
